Universities play a key role in shaping the future of society. Research has&#13;
shown that there is a correlation between the quality of higher education and&#13;
the social economic development of a country, especially its ability to compete&#13;
in the global marketplace.1 Apart from this, they fulfil other objectives of&#13;
university education by: promoting learning in the student body and society;&#13;
advancing knowledge through quality teaching and scholarly research;&#13;
fostering capacity for independent critical thinking amongst students; training&#13;
of professional and management personnel; disseminating to the general&#13;
community the outcomes of research; supporting life-long learning; promoting&#13;
gender balance and equality of opportunity for persons with disabilities,&#13;
minorities and other marginalized groups; and enhancing the cultural and&#13;
social life of society.2
