<title>Effectiveness of Foreign Aid on Healthcare Systems in Africa</title>
<link>http://erepository.uonbi.ac.ke/handle/11295/168193</link>
<description>Effectiveness of Foreign Aid on Healthcare Systems in Africa
Kioko, Ann
The provision of foreign aid to improve healthcare systems in African nations has been a longstanding global initiative aimed at addressing health disparities and improving overall well-being in the continent. This research project delves into the specific case of Kenya to critically evaluate the effectiveness of foreign aid in bolstering the nation's healthcare infrastructure, accessibility, and quality of care. While acknowledging the importance of foreign aid in addressing healthcare challenges, this study aims to provide an objective assessment of its impact, considering both positive outcomes and potential drawbacks.&#13;
The methodology employed in this research involves a comprehensive analysis of available data, including official healthcare statistics, financial aid records, and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders. The study considers the period from the early 2000s to the present, examining trends and changes in Kenya's healthcare system in response to foreign aid inflows.&#13;
Key findings of the research include an improvement in healthcare infrastructure, increased access to essential services, and advancements in medical technologies, all of which have contributed to better health outcomes for the Kenyan population. However, challenges related to aid dependency, sustainability, and potential political influence also emerge as important considerations. The study highlights the need for a balanced approach that ensures foreign aid aligns with national healthcare priorities and encourages self-sufficiency in the long term. Furthermore, this research emphasizes the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of foreign aid resources, as well as the necessity of fostering strong partnerships between donor agencies, the Kenyan government, and civil society organizations to maximize the benefits of foreign aid in healthcare.&#13;
In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness of foreign aid on healthcare systems in Kenya, shedding light on the complexities and nuances of this critical issue. It offers valuable insights for policymakers, donors, and healthcare professionals working toward the goal of improving healthcare outcomes in Kenya and across Africa.

<title>Conflicts in Laikipia, 1979-2017</title>
<link>http://erepository.uonbi.ac.ke/handle/11295/168180</link>
<description>Conflicts in Laikipia, 1979-2017
Kemei, Amon K
This study examines the sources and impacts of conflicts in Laikipia. It further explores&#13;
resilience, coping mechanisms, and initiatives to mitigate these conflicts. It is anchored on the&#13;
Environmental Scarcity Theory, which contends that scarcity alone cannot cause conflict unless it&#13;
intersects with other factors such as inequality, migration, and weak state institutions. The study&#13;
was conducted in Ol Moran, Thome, and Lorien areas of Laikipia County. Data was obtained from&#13;
both secondary sources and oral interviews. The study used the snowballing sampling technique&#13;
to identify respondents and interviewed them using a question guide. The oral data was analyzed&#13;
using coding and meta-coding to identify key themes.&#13;
The study found that the conflicts in Laikipia are shaped by the diversity of actors and the&#13;
region’s social, political, economic, and historical dynamics. The divergent views on land, nature,&#13;
and resource-use are the building blocks for the intractable conflicts. Political leaders have&#13;
manipulated historical grievances to incite violence to achieve their political goals, particularly&#13;
during the electioneering period, explaining why the conflict peaked in 2017. Sources often&#13;
overlap and evolve, and the proximate issues that trigger violent expression do not necessarily&#13;
prolong the conflict. The conflicts have severely impacted livelihoods, forcing communities to&#13;
devise coping mechanisms and retreat to alternative livelihood sources. For instance, pastoralist&#13;
communities started rearing goats and camels because they are more resilient to changing&#13;
rangeland ecosystems. Continued mobility stood out as the primary resilient mechanism for&#13;
pastoralists. However, unrestricted mobility defies boundaries, leading to disputes and intensifying&#13;
conflicts between pastoralists and other land users.&#13;
As a response mechanism, communities have acquired sophisticated weapons for defense&#13;
as well as for aggression. The increased availability of small arms and light weapons has intensified&#13;
the conflict and facilitated the commercialization of cattle rustling, further escalating the conflict.&#13;
Despite the state interventions through policies and conflict-resolution mechanisms, little has been&#13;
achieved. The efforts to silence the guns have been fraught with pitfalls, adding a new dynamic to&#13;
the conflict. Additionally, repetitive media stereotypic images and persistent flawed framing of&#13;
pastoralism and rangelands have contributed to the conflict. The flawed media narratives influence&#13;
public perceptions and government policies, often complicating the conflict rather than addressing&#13;
the ultimate conflicts. The study contributes to the understanding of resource-based conflict by&#13;
examining the holistic context of a conflict. It dissents from the notion that resource scarcity alone&#13;
causes conflicts, bringing to the fore the interplay of evolving conflict dynamics, historical&#13;
grievances, and limited government presence and interventions.

<title>The Effect of Climate Change on Food Security Among Vulnerable Populations in Africa</title>
<link>http://erepository.uonbi.ac.ke/handle/11295/168167</link>
<description>The Effect of Climate Change on Food Security Among Vulnerable Populations in Africa
Alukwe, Khamu T
This research aims to explore the effects climate change poses on the food security of vulnerable populations in Africa particularly Garissa County, in Kenya. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative interviews with quantitative data analysis and a review of relevant literature, the research explores how climatic shifts influence food production, availability, and access in the region. The findings reveal a strong correlation between climate-related factors and food insecurity, with vulnerable populations bearing the brunt of adverse effects due to limited adaptive capacity. Key insights from the study indicate that climate change exacerbates existing food insecurity, leading to decreased agricultural productivity, loss of livelihoods, and heightened poverty levels. The study also examines local coping mechanisms and adaptive strategies employed by affected communities and assesses the role of governmental and non-governmental organizations in building resilience. This research highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to enhance food security resilience in Garissa County. By recommending climate-smart agricultural practices, improved infrastructure for water management, and policy support for vulnerable groups, the study underscores the critical role of sustainable development strategies in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on food security in Africa.

<description>Bilateral Relations and Human Rights Issues of Kenyan Domestic Workers in Saudi Arabia
Murumba, Christine W
This study delves into the well-being of Kenyan household employees in Saudi Arabia, shaping Kenya’s diplomatic policies, including labor migration agreements and worker protection advocacy. It assesses the Kenyan Embassy’s effectiveness in addressing grievances, managing emergencies, and supporting workers' welfare, highlighting gaps in the enforcement and monitoring of bilateral agreements. The study emphasizes the importance of ethical recruitment and embassy resources in preventing mistreatment. The findings enhance our comprehension of the interaction between diplomatic relations and labor rights, guiding policy interventions aimed at addressing these critical human rights challenges
