    Abstract
    Objective: To estimate the magnitude and pattern of eye diseases in residents of Korogocho slum Nairobi. Design: Community based survey Setting: Korogocho slum Nairobi, Kenya; July and August 2002 Results: One thousand one hundred and thirty six (1136) persons were examined. There were 479 male (42%) and 657 females (58%). On examination, 61% had abnormal ocular findings. The leading causes of eye morbidity were refractive errors (25%) and allergic conjunctivitis (20%).8 subjects were blind (0.7%) and 20 had severe visual impairment (1.8%). Cataract was the leading cause of blindness (50%) and severe visual impairment (30%). Conclusion: Refractive error and allergic conjunctivitis were the leading causes of eye morbidity. Cataract was the leading cause of blindness and severe visual impairment. There is need to develop appropriate services addressing the special needs of this disadvantaged population.
