The central problem in this thesis is that despite reforms coming up in prisons over the years, there is the persistent problem of infringement of the right to adequate living standards of prisoners in the various prisons they are kept in. There has been legislative framework on prisoners’ rights but implementation of the same has been a problem. Administration of prisons has clearly failed to respect the inherent dignity and humanity of these persons whom have been deprived of their liberty. The purpose of this study is to bring to light the deplorable prison conditions and human rights violations going on in Kenyan prisons, understand the problems in the law leading to the challenges affecting prisoners as they serve their terms and to propose reforms to remedy these problems.en_US
