THE OGADEN SOMALIS; A CASE FOR SELF-DETERMINATION
Abstract
The primary concern this dissertation will be the problem of principles of international law that seem to find no expression in practical situations The principle of self-determination has presented problems to both lawyers and political scientists as Its legal applicability had not been established There is a wealth of theories which have held away for a long time that the principle of self-determination only a moral and political principle There la an almost irresistible school of thought dominant among jurists of modem times which holds that the principle is used by politicians to wield power This as wo shall see is an attempt it temporalizing the problem and dismissing It as though its merits do not go beyond overtones This is because the problem fate not in its legality but in its applicability to practical problems have chosen the Ogaden Somalis as a case study for several deliberate reasons To begin with there is inadequate literature on the Ogaden self-determination as most writers have dismissed the principle as being only political St is a region which caused slot of international speculation during the Ogaden War (1977 -1978) and no literature has been written conjoining that event Also I found this a most delectable study because of the Somalia claims lodged against Ethiopia to the effect that the Ogaden Somalis am living under ''alien'' subjugation and should therefore be allowed, to recede and join up with Somali It is very interesting the way ethnology blind people to all practical rubbles attached to the smite chose the Ogaden Somalis because of their way of life which though la being gradually discouraged is still very evident i.e. this way of life that has boon a hindrance to providing a viable solution to the problem of the Somalis is also an interesting area to study because if Water amination for the Ogaden Somalis will be achieved resulting into fiercest then it will trigger off other oldies in the of Africa including the already explosive shifts situation in Kenya could be an example of how political ambitions of cm State can upset the stability of other sovereign states crown it all, Ethiopia and Somalia are neighboring states to ©y om Country Kenya and the problems experience in the northern District of Kenya is a allover from the Ogata region and this is very interesting because I have watched the taxability caused by shift activities.
