Effects of Mango Value Addition on Employment in Makueni County
Abstract
The mango crop is an important fruit crop in Makueni County. However, it’s potential when it
comes to value addition and its influence on employment generation has not been studied and
documented. This study sought to understand the effects of mango value addition on
employment within kathozweni Sub County of Makueni County. This was done by examining
the methods used for mango value addition, the resultant products produced and how the process
links to employment creation in the area. The study also investigated the challenges that hinder
mango value addition and ultimately impact on employment creation in the area. The study was
premised on the theory of value and also supported and guided by the sustainable livelihoods
framework. The study employed mixed research methods, using both qualitative and quantitative
data. A total of 172 mango farmers and 9 key informants were interviewed. The findings of this
study show that mango value addition generates employment for the mango farmers and all other
residents in the area. However, mango value addition is largely practiced by use of simple
methods and easily produced basic products, which in turn curtails the number and quality of
employment opportunities created. The study also found out that enormous challenges faced
mango value addition ranging from lack of necessary knowledge and technology, lack of market
linkages for the products and lack of government promotion and support among others.
In conclusion the study pointed out the importance of increased and modern mango value
addition activities which would result in to massive employment opportunities. For this to be
realized government interventions on licensing, statutory compliance procedures and other
government support initiatives including awareness creation are important.
