Organizational Capacity and Sustainability of Donor Funded Healthcare Projects in Nairobi County, Kenya
Abstract
The research aimed to explore the impact of organizational capacity, community involvement, and donor policies on the sustainability of healthcare projects funded by donors in Nairobi County, Kenya. The specific objectives were to assess how organizational capacity affects the sustainability of donor-funded healthcare projects in Nairobi County, analyze the influence of community involvement on project sustainability, and determine the moderating role of donor policies in the relationship between organizational capacity, community involvement, and project sustainability in Nairobi County. A descriptive research design was employed for this study, focusing on health NGOs operating in Nairobi County. The Health NGOs Network (HENNET) membership served as the source of the study population, which comprised a total of 100 health NGOs. The sample size of 80 NGOs engaged in healthcare provision was determined using a sample size formula, and these NGOs were selected through simple random sampling. One Project Manager from each selected NGO served as the respondent for the study. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires, and the collected data were summarized using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Linear regression analysis was employed to evaluate the relationship between organizational capacity, community involvement, and project sustainability. The results revealed that organizational capacity had a positive and statistically significant influence on project sustainability (β=0.634, p value = 0.000). In the case of community involvement, the analysis indicated a positive and statistically significant relationship with the sustainability of donor-funded healthcare projects in the County. To explore the moderating effect of donor policies, multiple regression analysis was conducted. The findings showed that when donor policies were introduced into the regression model, the relationship between organizational capacity and sustainability remained positive and statistically significant (β=0.533, p value = 0.005). However, the relationship between community involvement and sustainability, while positive, was not statistically significant (β=0.085, p value = 0.409). Donor policies exhibited a positive but non-significant influence on the sustainability of donor-funded healthcare projects in NGOs operating in Nairobi County.
