Leather industry is a heavily polluting industry especially when it involves the use of chrome which results in direct effluent discharge to surface water systems and infiltration to underground water. Organic tanning or semi- metal tanning has in the recent past been suggested to be the future chemistry in the leather industry because it is less polluting to the environment as compared to chrome tanning, although its adoption remains at its doldrums. Previous studies had showed the tanning potential of Plectranthus barbatus leaf extract, although the strength of the leather had deficiencies in its quality characteristics especially the shrinkage temperature. The overall objective of this study was to identify the structure and chemical composition of any chemical constituents in Plectranthus barbatus leaf extract of a tannin type that would be useful additives in the preparation of clean leather while also lowering environmental pollution. The study identified diterpenes and phenolic compounds in Plectranthus barbatus leaf extract. Polyphenolic compounds are known to have tanning potential which can be exploited by the tanning industry for production of ecofriendly leather products...en_US
