Influence of Household Participation in Solid Waste Management in Naivasha, Nakuru County
Abstract
The study geared towards establishing the influence of household participation on solid waste management in Naivasha, Nakuru County. It was anchored on collective action theory and stakeholders’ theory. The researcher targeted residents of Naivasha obtaining a sample of 120 participants. A descriptive research design deemed best approach and adopted for the study. During the selection of the study’s sample, a stratified random sampling technique was deployed. Data collection applied structured closed-ended questionnaires created on Google Forms application and analyzed using descriptive statistics aided by (SPSS) version 24.0. The inferential ANOVA analysis and regression model suitable for categorical data were used to determine relationship of variable studied. The study established that household participation was positively correlated to their performance in terms of waste management behavior. The study also established the residents at Naivasha incur between Kshs 500 and Kshs 1,000 per month to dispose the wastes. Furthermore, the residents of Naivasha mostly dump their solid waste in one dumpsite or pit in the estate. In conclusion, household participation in solid waste management in Naivasha is a critical component of achieving a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Enhanced awareness about the environmental consequences of improper waste disposal, the financial costs associated with waste dumping, and the adoption of effective waste sorting methods are essential for improving the level of household involvement in this area.
