Strategic Planning Practices and Competitive Advantage by the National Research
Abstract
In Kenya, the innovation ecosystem is burgeoning, marked by a dynamic landscape driven by a growing interest in fostering entrepreneurship, technological advancements, and creative problem-solving. Amidst this growing landscape, various challenges confront innovators and entrepreneurs. These challenges include limited access to funding, resource constraints, evolving market demands, and the need for constant adaptation to technological advancements. In addressing these challenges and navigating the complexities of the innovation ecosystem, innovation agencies, such as the National Research Fund (NRF), play a pivotal role. These agencies serve as linchpins, offering crucial support, resources, and guidance to innovators and entrepreneurs. They act as catalysts, fostering an environment conducive to innovation, technological advancements, and economic growth. This study sought to establish the efficacy of strategic planning practices within the National Research Fund and their impact on fostering competitive advantage in the context of the vibrant Kenyan innovation ecosystem. The researcher used an interview guide to obtain data from some key practitioners within NRF. Content analysis was then employed by the researcher to analyse the qualitative data. The study found that NRF's strategic planning practices are well-aligned with the country's broader innovation goals and policies, ensuring a focused and cohesive approach to drive innovation. It also established that NRF's strategies for engaging with various stakeholders, including innovators, government bodies, and industry partners, are robust and contribute significantly to their competitive advantage. Another finding was that NRF effectively allocates resources, such as funding, expertise, and technology, resulting in tangible outcomes and a strong competitive position within the innovation landscape. In conclusion, the study established that NRF’s strategic planning practices play a pivotal role in enhancing the agency's competitive advantage within the Kenyan innovation ecosystem and that NRF’s alignment with the national innovation agenda, effective stakeholder engagement, and efficient resource allocation are key factors contributing to its competitive edge. Finally, the study recommends the need for further strengthening collaborations with industry, academia, and government entities to broaden innovation support. It would also be prudent for NRF to deploy continual efforts to optimize resource usage and explore new funding mechanisms or partnerships as well as have in place a continual emphasis on aligning strategies with the country's innovation objectives, staying abreast of policy changes, and ensuring that its initiatives directly support national innovation agendas.
