This study examines the influence of strategic leadership on core competencies within the State Department for Public Works in Kenya. It was based on Upper Echelons Theory as well as Transformational Leadership Theory. It was a case study and information were based on the company among senior managers within the firm. The analysis utilized content analysis and it noted that leaders must embrace vision setting, communication, and fostering a culture of innovation, significantly influence the enhancement of core competencies within the State Department. The study's findings underscore the critical role of managing firm activities through inclusion of various models. Leaders who exhibit strategic vision and engage in transformational leadership behaviours contribute to the cultivation of essential skills and capabilities among their teams. This not only enhances organizational effectiveness but also enables the department to better fulfil its mandate of delivering public services efficiently and effectively. Consequently, the study concludes that investing in strategic leadership development initiatives is paramount for public sector organizations aiming to build and sustain competitive advantage in today's dynamic environment. Based on these conclusions, recommendations are made for both organizational leaders and policy makers. Organizational leaders within the State Department for Public Works are encouraged to prioritize strategic leadership training and development programs for their leadership cadre. These programs should focus on cultivating strategic thinking, effective communication, and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Additionally, policy makers in Kenya are urged to support initiatives that promote strategic leadership development across all public sector entities. This could involve the establishment of standardized leadership assessment frameworks and funding for leadership training programs tailored to the unique needs of public service organizations. By implementing these recommendations, the State Department for Public Works and similar organizations can enhance their core competencies and better serve the citizens of Kenya.
