dc.description.abstract | Student politics and representation significantly influence the governance and policies of
higher education institutions in Kenya because students are crucial stakeholders in the
education system. The research topic, "Student Politics and Their Influence on Higher
Education Governance in Kenya," explores the autonomy and legitimacy of student
representative bodies and how they influence university governance.
The study investigates the structure of students' governance in higher learning institutions,
the methods through which students endeavor to shape policies and practices in higher
education, and the implications of the amendment of the University Act (2016) on students'
governance and activism in Kenya.
This study is grounded in the Multi-Level Governance theory, which posits that good
governance emerges from decentralized decision-making processes in an open scope,
involving stakeholders. The study holds significant relevance for higher education
stakeholders as it addresses an essential aspect of overseeing higher education in Kenya. By
understanding the importance of autonomous and legitimate representative bodies, academic
institutions and policymakers can work toward creating a more inclusive and participatory
environment for students.
The study employed a mixed-method approach, including interviews, focus group
discussions, and surveys, to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The findings
underscore the importance of student activism and student engagement in shaping higher
education policies and provide valuable insights for universities, policymakers, and student
leaders in promoting positive change and strengthening student politics and university
governance. | en_US |
