Emerging Art Trends Among Contemporary Kenyan Artists
Abstract
For centuries, artistic movements have evolved from one to another due to a combination of dissatisfaction with existing conventions, advancements in technology, socio-political changes, and the desire for self-expression and innovation. This is not any different from what is happening in the Kenyan art scene, especially among contemporary artists in this digital age. Artistic trends are vital as they drive cultural expression and they are constantly changing. This study explores the dynamic landscape of contemporary Kenyan art, delving into the emerging trends that shape the creative expressions of artists within this vibrant community. Problem: There is a notable absence of comprehensive research on the emerging art trends among contemporary Kenyan artists. Objective: To comprehensively identify and analyse emerging art trends in Kenya using examples of four contemporary Kenyan artists. Design: The research uses a case study approach along with qualitative methods to obtain relevant data. Setting: The study was carried out in Nairobi, Kenya. Subjects: The subjects of this study of this study were local contemporary artists. Results: Technology is arguably the biggest impact on art trends among contemporary artists in Kenya, as it continuously introduces new tools, platforms, and mediums that expand creative possibilities and democratize access to art creation. Conclusion: The study contributes to the preservation and promotion of Kenya's cultural heritage by documenting and understanding the evolving art trends. The scope of the study involves a comprehensive exploration of emerging art trends among four contemporary Kenyan artists. The study area is Nairobi.
