Project Execution Procedures and It’s Impact on Long-term Viability of Communal Water Projects in Kenya - Case Study Mwala Sub-county in Machakos County
Abstract
The execution of a project is often subject to several external forces. Given this circumstance, it is imperative to have a well-defined plan for implementation in order to guarantee successful execution. This research was aimed at assessing the effects of execution tactics on the long-term viability of water projects within the community. The idea for this inquiry came from the fact that a lot of water projects in Mwala sub county are having problems due to poor implementation procedures and consultations with stakeholders, the primary aims for the research was to evaluate the effects of the project implementation procedure for long-term viability of communal water projects in Mwala Sub-County. More than that, this research intended to investigate how resource management affects the long-term viability of these projects, how project team competency affects long-term viability, and how stakeholders affect long-term viability. The present study utilized a stratified random sample methodology in order to partition the population into several strata based on their departmental affiliations. Due to the heterogeneity observed within the population of interest, we chose this approach. We collected the major data for this study by using structured Surveys designed to elicit specific information from the respondents. In addition, the inclusion of open-ended questions allowed the respondents to provide their independent views and opinions on the topic. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data whereby out of 114, 84 filled and submitted the Surveys representing 75 % of the total population. The data was later analyzed using SPSS software. The study found that the presence of project resources significantly impacts project implementation effectiveness and long-term viability. A total of 36% of the Respondents agreed, while 45% agreed, and 12% neutralized. The value of resources was also a significant factor, with 28% agreeing. The importance of resource quantity and quality in project outcomes was also agreed upon, with 33% of the Respondents strongly agreeing. The study also found that resource management is crucial for project performance, with 14% agreeing, 57% agreeing, 19% neutral, and 10% disagreeing. The viability of a project depends on efficient resource allocation and utilization, with a Mean Value of 3.77. The research evaluated the influence of stakeholder engagement on the long-term viability of a communal water project in Mwala Sub-County. The results showed that 33% of respondents agreed that stakeholder involvement is crucial for translating planned initiatives into tangible actions. The study also found that 38% of Respondents strongly agreed that involving stakeholders in development

projects helps identify problems and barriers that hinder long-term success. The majority of Respondents agreed that stakeholders should be involved in overseeing resource usage during project execution to make it more sustainable. The study also found that 14% of Respondents strongly agreed, 57% agreed, 19% were uncertain, and 10% disagreed. Overall, the study highlights the importance of shareholder engagement in project success.
The survey also assessed Respondents' perspectives on change management, revealing that 28% agreed, 48% agreed, 14% neutral, and 10% disagreed. The study also assessed the importance of engaging project planning experts in managing changes to project requirements to improve project achievement and Long term Viability. The survey also revealed that 36% agreed, 33% agreed, 19% neutral, and 10% disagreed. The survey also asked Respondents about the importance of change management for team leaders in reducing risks that could lead to project failure. The Mean Value for the survey was 3.57 thus showing sustainability is significantly influenced by the method of project execution. The project's success is dependent on effective resource management, which involves the distribution of resources such as human resources, materials, and financial assets. Stakeholder engagement is critical for the long-term viability of these initiatives, as it helps convert intended programs into practical tasks and activities. The study concludes that effective management of project modifications is essential for the long-term sustainability of these projects. It is essential to consider the current conditions, manage stakeholder expectations, and ensure project teams have a thorough understanding of the transformation process.
