Generally, this study is about the role of emerging technology in disarmament and non-proliferation, using Switzerland as a case study. Consequently, it assessed Switzerland’s current commitment to utilizing emerging technologies in disarmament and non-proliferation, before determining Switzerland’s strategies for effectively integrating emerging technologies into its disarmament and non-proliferation frameworks, and discussing the challenges that Switzerland faces in implementing emerging technologies in disarmament and non-proliferation. At the end, several recommendations were made to help Switzerland embrace the use of emerging technologies in disarmament and non-proliferation better. The study also set out three hypotheses namely that through strategic planning, collaboration and resource allocation, Switzerland successfully integrates emerging technologies into its disarmament frameworks, enhancing verification, transparency and compliance with global standards. Secondly, that Switzerland’s dedication to applying emerging technologies in disarmament and non-proliferation is closely tied to its investments in research, international partnerships and supportive policy frameworks. Thirdly, that Switzerland faces significant challenges in implementing emerging technologies for disarmament and non-proliferation due to factors such as technological complexity, regulatory constraints and geopolitical dynamics. The study which depended largely on secondary data with intermediate use of charts and graphs including thematic approach to present information was situated within the constructivism theory. The study found out that Switzerland uses various strategies in its quest for disarmament and non-proliferation. Key among them is engagement in multilateral fora. Switzerland is involved with institutions such as the UN and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Here, it champions for disarmament practices that are responsive to technological advancements. Switzerland has assumed a leadership position within the UN’s Conference on Disarmament (CD). Aside from international fora, the study found out that Switzerland employs the use of various emerging/new technologies to advance its agenda of disarmament and non-proliferation. First, Switzerland uses A.I for advanced data analysis and pattern recognition, enhancing the ability to detect treaty violations by tracking the movement of restricted materials and weapons. It also supports more informed decision-making in arms control verification processes. Secondly, the study found that Switzerland has investigated the use of blockchain technology to enhance. transparency and ensure traceability in arms transfer and dual-use goods. The decentralized and immutable features of blockchain provide a reliable framework for maintaining compliance and curbing illicit transactions. Lastly, the study has given recommendations to boost the use of emerging technologies in disarmament and non-proliferation by Switzerland. They include, that the Swiss government should prioritize increased investment in advanced technological infrastructure. The government should focus on enhancing the precision, efficiency, and reliability of systems such as AI-driven monitoring and blockchain-based verification. Secondly, Switzerland should implement regular ethical reviews and conduct impact assessments. In addition, the government should hold regular consultations with stakeholders, as this can help to ensure that the deployment of technology is in line with humanitarian principles. Thirdly, the study comes up with an area of further academic research; Research on the long-term implications of emerging technologies on arms control verification and compliance mechanisms.
