The Effect of Climate Change on Food Security Among Vulnerable Populations in Africa
Abstract
This research aims to explore the effects climate change poses on the food security of vulnerable populations in Africa particularly Garissa County, in Kenya. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative interviews with quantitative data analysis and a review of relevant literature, the research explores how climatic shifts influence food production, availability, and access in the region. The findings reveal a strong correlation between climate-related factors and food insecurity, with vulnerable populations bearing the brunt of adverse effects due to limited adaptive capacity. Key insights from the study indicate that climate change exacerbates existing food insecurity, leading to decreased agricultural productivity, loss of livelihoods, and heightened poverty levels. The study also examines local coping mechanisms and adaptive strategies employed by affected communities and assesses the role of governmental and non-governmental organizations in building resilience. This research highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to enhance food security resilience in Garissa County. By recommending climate-smart agricultural practices, improved infrastructure for water management, and policy support for vulnerable groups, the study underscores the critical role of sustainable development strategies in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on food security in Africa.
