Role of the media in conflict transformation in Somalia: A case study of radio Galka Yo

Abstract

In a country plagued by conflict, the immense role played by the media cannot be ignored. Media can and have been instrumental in escalating conflicts, as well as de­ escalating the same depending on how it is handled. When used responsibly, media has been a vital tool in conflict resolution, management and transformation. However, if used irresponsibly, the media can divide a community or a nation such as witnessed in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.

This study sought to explore the contribution of mass media in the conflict transformation agenda in Somalia. The study found its theoretical framework in the Agenda Setting Theory and sought to establish the role media has played towards the peace processes in Somalia. The study specifically wanted to establish if, indeed, what the media in Somalia has been advancing as the main issues facing Somalia in their peacebuilding programming, are perceived as such by the audience.

Primary data was obtained from a sample in Isra Village, Mudug region, Galkayo, Puntland in Somalia, while secondary data was obtained from diverse sources. The data was analyzed and presented and a correlation was established. The findings indicated a strong correlation between items emphasized by the media and those perceived by the audience to be as important III the country's quest for peace.
