A study of Nandi phonology using a natural generative phonology framework

Abstract

This study is a description of Nandi morphophonological processes within the Natural Generative Phonology (NGP) framework. It aimed at examining the phonological alternations that occur in Nandi. This dissertation IS divided into four chapters each discussing a particular aspect of the study.

Chapter one provides an introductory section; it gives background to the study, statement of the problem, the objectives and the hypotheses, scope and limitations, theoretical framework, review of literature and methodology.

Chapter two introduces basic information about Nandi segmental phonology. It discusses the consonants and vowels of Nandi and their distribution.

Chapter three is an analysis of the various phonological processes that are evident in the language. Each process is accompanied with a phonological rule in distinctive features.

Chapter four concludes the study that indeed NGP is adequate enough to analyze the phonological processes of Nandi. It also presents findings and recommendations.
