The effects of Hiv/Aids on labour productivity:a case Study of Nairobi district

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of HIV / AIDS on labour productivity. Its purpose was to study the variables that resulted from the HIV / AIDS epidemic and how they affected the productivity of labour. The research questions focused on the variables of the study and they included: • Is there a relationship between absenteeism and labour productivity? • Is there a relationship between labour turnover and its productivity? • Is there a relationship between interruption of work programmes and labour productivity? • Is there a relationship between employee training and labour productivity? • Is there a relationship between increased medical expenses and labour productivity? • Is there a relationship between hiring new employees and labour productivity? • Is there a relationship be tween employees' emotional stress and labour productivity? The study focused on three organizations within Nairobi District and questionnaires were administered to the selected sample population to assist in data collection. The findings were mostly positive, that proved the research hypotheses right but with a few variations. Several factors that were felt to influence productivity in relation to HIV / AIDS infection were discussed and a presentation made. Such factors as absenteeism, increased labour turnover, increased medical costs, recruitment and training and so on, were discussed and their effects on productivity brought out as they are caused by the HIV/ AIDS epidemic. It was therefore concluded that HIV / AIDS has had tremendous impact on labour productivity and further research was recommended on the impact of the epidemic on the general performance of the organization.
