    Abstract
The portrayal of Mandela in Part of My Soul and in Long Walk to Freedom has been explored through the analysis of literary strategies that the works employ. The study begins with an introduction that encompasses the statement of the problem, the hypotheses, objectives, justification, literature review, theoretical framework, the methodology, the scope and limitation of the study. Thereafter the study analyses the portrayal of Mandela in the two works. The study is guided by the formalist approach that aids in the analysis of literary strategies employed to reveal Mandela's character. The discussion on literary strategies has focused on the main strategies that each work employs in revealing his character and subsequently the image that emerges. In revealing his character the two works complement each other in that Part of My Soul give Mandela's image from a witness perspective whereas Long Walk to Freedom give the self portrayal.
