Attitudes of adolescent boys towards contraception in Korogocho area, Nairobi

Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine the attitude among adolescence boy and how this affects the use or non-use of contraception methods. The data used for this study was primarily collected from respondents in Our Lady of Fatima Secondary school, Korogocho which is within a low income area bearing the characteristic both of rural and urban low income area. The study used cross-tabulation and chi-square methods of analysis .chi-square statistics were used to determine the significance of the association between selected variable and the sexual activity and contraceptive use. The findings of the study have underscored the role of attitudes of adolescence boy towards contraceptive practice. The results also provide evidence on the need for correct practice of the available contraception method to avoid risky behaviors and their importance on adverse consequence of early sexual debut. Findings of the study revealed that boys age 17 were more sexually involved while as one progresses to a higher class there was a decrease in the use of contraceptive or the boys simply did not answer. Majority of the respondents professed that it was important to use contraception method either to prevent HIV or pregnancy, how contraceptive was found to be low. With regard to actual use, F.2 class was found to use the highest number of contraceptive at the time of the survey. Condom was also found to be the preferred contraceptive among boys. This is mainly due to the strong attitude the boys have that condom is the safest way of preventing unwanted pregnancy and STIs, including HIV/AIDS. It is recommended that the government in its budgetary allocation should have allocation for contraceptive and work towards integrating FP methods with other service in health delivery.
