    Abstract
This study sought to examine the role of community based organisations III poverty alleviation. Specifically YSWGs were studied as an example of CBOs. A random sample of 32 respondents and 16 purposively selected key informants were interviewed through administration of questionnaires. Data collected from the respondents was analysed using descriptive statistics. The study established that the women groups have done a lot to help alleviate poverty both at individual level and community level. This is through activities like basketry, road construction, water harvesting, health awareness, soil conservation, bee keeping, merry go rounds, and tree planting. In addition they have gained a lot of skills from seminars attended and also through practice. Socially, they have also gained from the encouragement from group members and contributions it times of bereavement, fund raisings, sickness, among other functions. In conclusion, the study recommends policies aimed at strengthening CBOs. Such policies would be the most appropriate and effective when implemented with the aim of poverty alleviation at grassroots levels.
