    Abstract
I wish to thank my supervisor Dr.P. M. Walji for her invaluable guidance and close supervision, without which this study could not have been a success as well as Dr. O.N. Gakuru who spared his valuable time to go through this work in the absence of Dr. Walji. I am indeed indebted to Chris Luthi (Warugendo) for his enlightening suggestions and challenging comments. I wish to single out for appreciation the financial assistance that was accorded to me by UNICEF, through the Sociology Department, which enabled me to comfortably complete what would otherwise have turned out to be a financially straining research. I am greatful to Thuita (TT), Kago, Wachira, who tirelessly helped to collect the raw data for this survey. Thanks to all the Muhindi's and those friends like Njagu, Nkubitu Gathigi, Rose Njeri, Kabare and others who always understood my predicaments, for the courage that they gave me which made me see the light at the end of what seemed to be an endless tunnel. Special thanks to Maggie Mwaila for sparing her time to edit this research thesis. -
