Extent of sexual awareness and contraception practice among male adolescents in Gichagi slum Ngong' Township

Abstract

The study investigated the extent of sexual awareness and contraception among men adolescents in Gichagi slum in Ngong Township. This study focused on male adolescents between thirteen and fifteen years. The data used in this study was collected from respondents from Kibiko secondary school and Ngong Township primary school which receives students and pupils from low income areas of Mathare, Bulbul and Gichagi slums. Quantitative data collected focused on various aspects of sexual awareness and contraception practice among male adolescents of thirteen to fifteen years. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire. The objectives of this study were 1. To establish the level of sexual awareness among male adolescents of ages thirteen to fifteen years. 2. To asses the extent of early coitus among male adolescents between thirteen to fifteen years. 3. To establish to what extent male adolescents between thirteen and fifteen. years are aware that contraceptives are used to prevent HIVIAIDS infection. The study used cross-tabulation and chi-square methods of analysis. The chi-square statistics were used to determine the significance of the association between selected variable and the extent sexual awareness and contraceptive practice. The findings of this study underscored the extent sexual awareness and contraception practice among male adolescents' of thirteen to fifteen years. The results also provide evidence on the need to introduce sex education from upper primary school level, parents to actively participate in sex education of their children and to give contraception knowledge to adolescents from pre-adolescence period. This study established that male adolescents are aware of sexual maters at an early age of even 10 years(70%).Some of them start practicing sex at an early age of 12 years. The result also shows that a majority would like contraceptives to be introduced to adolescents at an early age. It is recommended that sex education should be incorporated in the school curriculum and -be taught from upper primary and that sex educators to insist on abstinence as the best method of prevention against HIV/AIDS, STls and early pregnancy among the adolescents.
