A survey of the relationship between strategic planning and performance in the textile manufacturing firms in Kenya.

Abstract

This was a survey on the relationship between strategic planning and performance in the textile-manufacturing firms in Kenya. The study was carried out in all the textile manufacturing companies in Kenya. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire. From the findings of this study, it is evident that the organizations in the textile industry rely heavily on strategic planning to survive. It is also evident that there are three types of firms in the industry: those that are declining in performance, those that are improving in performance and those that are stagnating. As implied by the findings of the study, there is a strong relationship between strategic planning and company performance. Strategic planning was seen as playing a critical role in the survival of the companies. This study therefore concludes that in an industry, such as the textile manufacturing in Kenya, where there has been a lot of external environmental turbulence, the companies that improve in performance are those that adhere to formal strategic planning. Without which, the result is decline and/or stagnation.
