Factors influencing the implementation of the 8-4-4 Prevocational curriculum in Kenya primary schools: A comparative study of Nairobi city and Nyandarua District

Abstract

In this study, the researcher presents the results OJ.. a research investigating the factors influencing the implementation of the 8-4-4 prevocational education curriculum in Kenyan primary schools by comparing one urban centre, Nairobi, and one rural area, Nyandarua. The research design was an intranational survey. Questionnaires were administered to a total of 84 teachers, 22 headteachers and 660 pupils. The questionnaires were designed to measure their attitudes towards the teaching and learning of Homescience, Agriculture, Art and Crafts, and Music; the availability of resources; the quality and quantity of teachers; the community support given in the financing and management of Schools; and the teaching/assessment methods used in prevocational subjects. Analysis and interpretation of the data collected on the above four factors revealed both significant similarities and important differences between Nairobi and Nyandarua in the way they affect implementation. iii The study ends with the conclusions and recommendations for further research and policy in light of the findings.
