    Abstract
The objective of this thesis is two-fold. First, is to estimate the infant and child mortality in Kenya at the national, provincial and district levels by all possible differentials. Second, to study the patterns and seasonality of births and deaths in Central province by using the complete vital registration of Nyeri, Murang"a and Kirinyaga. The major finding in this thesis is that for substantial reduction of infant and child mortality, a policy for universal secondary education for girls is essential. Special Health policy is required for malaria zones
