Road traffic accidents and conflicts on some T-junctions in Nairobi

Abstract

The study was based on accidents and conflicts on some selected T-junctions in Nairobi. The objectives of the study were: to study accidents and conflicts on selected T-junctions with a view to understanding the problems of the junctions, to develop models which relate conflicts to traffic flow, to evaluate the vehicle types which contribute the largest number of conflicts.Accidents data were collected from most police stations in Nairobi from which T-junctions were identified as one of the most accident prone areas. Six T-junctions were selected for the study. Conflict (which are near accident situations) studies were carried out on these sites. The other data collected included vehicular flow. Conflict studies showed that matatus (public transport vehicles) initiated more conflicts than any other vehicle type. A further study was therefore made on the matatu operation in Nairobi
