Estimation of adult mortality in Kenya using information on orphan-hood

Abstract

There are various ways of constructing life table using indirect methods. One such method is using information of both child and adult mortality. In this thesis we have used the Trussell's method of estimating child mortality and Brass-HilI/Trussell-Hill method to estimate adult mortality based on orphanhood. Thus we have what is known as the Patched method of constructing life table. It has been shown that this method is a good barometer for detecting under-reporting and over-reporting of child deaths. We have used the difference in the proportions of respondents aged 0-4 with mother alive and father alive, to measure the degree of adoption effect in variuos regions .
