Genetic variation and evolutionary relationships among some zaprionus species of Kenya

Abstract

Electrophoretically demonstrable variation was analyzed in ten enzymes encoded by fifteen genetic loci in samples from nine populations of five Zaprionus species from Kenya • frequencies were determined from different collection localities. The pattern of variation was found to be such that, frequencies between localities are fairly uniform in amount and kind, but frequencies among different species are considerably different in different species than within each of the species. Concerning the pattern of variation in different genes, we found that there is more variation in some genes than in others. The average proportion of heterozygous individuals range from 1.5% a~ the Adhlocus to 48.6% at the Est-7 locus. Observed and expected genotype proportions were found in good agreement.
