    Pseudoexfoliation syndrome at Kikuyu eye unit, Kenya

    Abstract
    A cross-sectional study was carried out at K.E.U to determine the prevalence of XFS and its associated ocular features. A total of 491 patients (274 F and 217 M) aged 50 years and above, were examined during the study period. Their median age was 65 years. The 491 included patients from Kenya (69%), Somalia ( 19%) Sudan (8%), Uganda (3%) and Rwanda (1%). These were further classified according to their ethnic origin as Bantu (61%), Cushite (23%) and Nilotes (16%). .. The prevalence ofXFS calculated in patients aged 50 years and above was 21.9% i.e., 113 out of 491 patients (61 F and 52 M). The median age was 69 and SD 9.551.0f note is that the majority of the patients with XFS were of Somali origin ( 70%). Additionally, the Cushite ethnic origin had a larger number of patients with XFS of the three ethnic origins (78%). The main ocular features associated with XFS were Cataracts (77 %), Glaucoma (28.3%), and Zonular dehiscence (10.6%), of which 2.7% presented with dislocated lens and 6.2 % had subluxation. Two patients(1.8%) had Branch Retinal vein occlusion.
