    Abstract
The pattern and the incidence of congenital malformations among7,355 consecutive births at Kenyatta National Hospital, was studied over a period of one year. The overall incidence of externally discernible malformations among these babies was 28.1 per 1000 total births. Major malformations occurred at a frequency of 15 per 1000 total births. Musculoskeletal system was the most frequently involved accounting for 33.9% of all major malformations, followed by central nervous system 28.6%. Polydactyly was the most common single malformation found with an incidence of 10 per 1000 total births. Polydactyly was also twice as RS common in males than females. Congenital malformations were significantly more common in low birth weight babies (all babies weighing 2500 gms. or less). Neural tube defects and chromosomal disorders were common contrary to previous reports. As a whole congenital malformations occurred in proportions that are comparable to other African studies. 2 50.9% of the babies with major congenital malformations survived the neonatal period. The combined mortality rate (SB + NND) was 44.6%. ( Malformations of central nervous system ended in death more often than others followed by chromosomal disorders. Recommendation for similar studies in different parts of Kenya was made.
