Effects Of The Triphasic Oral Contraceptive On Lipid And Lipoprotein Metabolism

Abstract

The effects of the triphasic oral Contraceptive (Ethinylestradiol (EE) and Levonorgesterol (LNG)) on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism was evaluated in ninety-seven black Kenyan women. Subjects were recruited between June 1984 and May 1985 and they were followed up for twelve months. There was an increase in fastlng levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c). These changes were not statistically significant. However, the triglyceride increase was statistically significant at nine months and twelve months (p< 0.05). The high density

lipoprotein cholesterol remained unchanged. This triphasic oral contraceptive was found to have minimal effect on the lipid and lipoprotein metabolism.
