The prevalence of community acquired urinary tract infections among HIV-1 positive patients at Kenyatta National Hospital
Abstract
BACKGROUND
Opportunistic infections are common in HIV positive patients more so in the advanced
stages. Urinary tract infections (UTls) are one of the commonest reported infections in the
medical practice. Among HIV positive patients some literature suggests that UTls are
common at CD4 counts below 200/microL and that the bacteriology patterns may be
different when compared to patterns seen in other community acquired UTls. The use of
Cotrimoxazole prophylaxis for Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia has created selective
pressure that has resulted in the rise of drug resistant uropathogens. Locally, there is :If
paucity of data concerning the prevalence and patterns of urinary tract infections in general
and specifically in HIV positive patients.
STUDY OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this study was to determine the point prevalence of community
acquired urinary tract infections among HIV-1 positive patients, attending the
comprehensive care clinic at Kenyatta National Hospital.
