    Abstract
    This is a social history of Mombasa Kenya that focuses upon muslim women and their activities. By examining women's economic, social, and ritual practices, this dissertation attempts to explain how colonialism affected Mombasa's Muslim women, how class differences influenced their experiences how women's activities helped over came some ethnic and class divisions. and how slave and free women contributed to the evolution of Swahili culture.
