    Abstract
Most pavement design methods in developing countries in general and Kenyain particular have their origin fran those practices generally developed and suited to t.errperate climate (mainly Europe). Direct use of these design methods has been suspect.ed to be the main source of premature failure of road pavements in the recent past in Kenya. As road transportation plays a vet:y important role in the economic deveIopnent; of Kenya it was considered desirable to initiate a pavement research programme to establish whether the above suspicion is warranted and further develop a basis uponwhich sound pavement design procedure can be developed.
