    Abstract
This report deals with the study of possible ways of supplying electIcity to the rural areas. Two major ways are distinguished (i) Extension of existing power lines and (ii) local generation. The various renewable sources of energy and ways in which they can be converted to electricity are presented. These are compared from technical and economical view points. Rural loads are briefly presented and grouped on the basis of geographical location and social status of users.
