An evaluation of educational institution's facilities in supporting external users. a case study of the University of Nairobi, Main campus

Abstract

This study sought to evaluate the facilities of educational institutions and to establish means by which they could be optimally utilized. The specific areas of interest were the suitability and requirements for supporting alternative uses other than the traditional academic purposes, and also challenges that could be faced in the process. It was found out that these facilities have met most of the requirements needed to support various events. Even though numerous challenges existed they could always be overcome. These facilities were found out to be underutilized at certain times of the year. Various alternative uses to ensure optimum performance were suggested. These uses include: Organizational events, Personal, Cultural and Social events which can be held in these facilities. The findings of this study demonstrate the need to enhance good performance through cutting on costs of holding idle capacity and proposes ways of increasing revenues that would help in achieving core objectives. The study consists of five chapters. Chapter one introduces the problem statement, objectives of the study, research hypothesis, significance of the study, scope and organization of the study. Chapter two covers literature related to the range of facilities which are used in supporting various kinds of events their suitability and their requirements. Chapter three gives a brief description of the study area and covers the research methodology. This includes the research design, data collection procedures, and data analysis procedures. Chapter four covers the data analysis and interpretation of the actual data from the survey. It gives findings and analysis related to the area studied. Chapter five contains conclusions and recommendations. The chapter therefore aims to integrate the theorized situation in chapter one to the situation on the ground.
