Community organizations, their role in the maintenance management of basic infrastructure in middle- income estates. a case study of Buru Buru estate

Abstract

The study is centered on the state and quality of the environment with special reference to Bum Buru estate, a planned residential estate. Buru Buru is an estate taken to be a representative sample of what is the state in most of Nairobi's residential areas. The main objectives of the study have been to: Discuss in detail, the details of Maintenance Management in theory and practice, and this is captured in Chapter two. Examine the Local Authority functions in Nairobi and the management structure of the, local authority in relation to the execution of its functions. Their responsibilities as enjoined in the Local government Act is also brought to light. This is discussed in Chapter three. Introduce the concept of Community Organizations to the study, their importance and relevance to Environmental Maintenance and their characteristics in order that their role in Maintenance Management of basic infrastructure can be easily encapsulated in Chapter four. This is captured in Chapter three. To draw a contrast between the local authorities and community organizations role as regards maintenance management. This contrast has been summed up in Chapter four, which details out the party currently carrying out Maintenance management work in Buru Buru Estate. To draw conclusions and come up with proposals and recommendations which local authorities and community organizations in maintaining environmental quality in middle- income estates can adopt. This is captured in Chapter five of this study.
