Safety of sunbreakers in the University of Nairobi: case study of education building, main campus
Abstract
There was need to curb the problem of increased losses and damages arising from the
unsafe conditions of the sunbreakers. The risk was paused because concentration was
given to the structural elements and ignoring other non- - structural architectural elements,
which were put up carelessly.
As will be seen from the latter chapters, joinery is usually a major consideration
that should be put in mind especially where precast elements are concerned. This would
avoid any failure, which would integrate the whole precast element. Joinery should be
made as stable as possible because if it fails the whole element fails.
Materials used to make sunbreakers are very vital too. Poorly selected materials
would pose hazards to users and passers-by and this would negatively affect the quality of
the environment in which the sunbreakers is serving. Hence, the factors to be considered
as listed later in the literature review should be put in mind.
In architectural elements, in this case sunbreakers, design is a changing factor
Today the design of a sunbreakers has greatly changed from what it was some years back.
Man is greatly influenced by aesthetic looks and would prefer different designs according to tastes of different people: Design therefore may tempt the building owner to put up very
unsafe elements. It is not obvious that the most appealing design is the safest. This is
sometimes not considered when choosing the design and may pose great hazards after
sometime. This may lead to negative consequences to the users.
to arrive to this solution of enhancing safety, the researcher used both the primary and
secondary sources of data. The primary data was obtained from field study. Secondary
data was obtained from what was already been found out. And written by others on the
field of study
