The role of ultrasonography in the management of gynaecologic pelvic masses at Kenyatta National Hospital [K.N.H.] a one year prospective study

Abstract

A prospective study to compare clinical and ultrasonographic features as confirmed by laparotomy in patients suspected to have gynaecological pelvic masses was done. Ultrasound pelvic scans were performed on 350 patients. The commonest indication for a pelvic sonographic examination at Kenyatta National Hospital [K.N.fI.] was found to be a suspected tuboovarian mass. 100 patients, who had further management following the results of ultrasound examination were followed up. Only in very few cases was the definite histological diagnosis obtained. Out of the 100 patients followed up and confirmed on laparotomy, 22 patients had ovarian cysts, 14 ectopic pregnancy, 8 uterine fibroids, 8 tuba-ovarian abscesses and 6 tuba-ovarian masses.
