The impact of smasse project on the performance of mathematics and sciences in Karemo Division: Siaya District.

Abstract

The objectives of Mathematics and Science teaching have largely not been achieved as indicated by performance in National examinations. It is important to note that there has been poor performance in Mathematics and Sciences, which is a major source of concern to the government, parents and educators in the country. The attitude of teachers and students towards these subjects is negative. Teachers have been blamed for this poor state of affairs and perhaps rightly so. Low achievement as seen in poor performance in examinations is an indicator of poor learning resulting from ineffective teaching. SMASSE project was therefore conceived as an intervention measure to upgrade the capability of young Kenyans in Mathematics and Science. It is therefore an initiative aimed at Strengthening Mathematics and Science in Secondary Education through the institutionalization and regularization of In-service training in our schools. In order to address the situation, change has to take place in the classroom. The research design for this study is descriptive survey. The populajion of the study comprise of 100 teachers and 2,448 students drawn from 11 secondary schools in Karemo Division. Simple random sampling technique was used to identify the respondents. A sample size of 640 students and 33 teachers were randomly selected for the study. The responses were gathered by use of postal questionnaire. Data for the study was analysed by use of tables and charts. This study was conducted between 2nd September and 6th September purposely to find out the extent to which the themes of the respective INSET had been achieved. Since the region of concern was Karemo Division, the study was carried out within the boundaries of the division. The study also aimed at finding out the impact that the SMASSE project has had so far in the performance of Mathematics and Sciences in the district.t
