Motivation has been used to represent the energy or intensity underlying
behaviour, Carron (1980). Thus without motivation there may be no behaviour. Any explanation of athletic behaviour must therefore include an understanding of its motivational bases.
There are many different kinds of motivational phenomena, and as can
be appreciated, an understanding of one form or theory of motivation does not give us the whole truth or the complete pi cture regarding this area. My main concern in this relatively short essay is to outline the theory of achievement motivation and show how it applies to sport and physical education as the title of this essay suggests.
