Abstract

These guidelines focus on urban pedestrian and bicycle traffic. They also deal with conflicts and common interests between pedestrian and bicycle traffic and other traffic, in particular, public transit (bus) and car traffic. The guidelines are an attempt to create the starting point for the establishment of a detailed and well tested set of traffic planning and road design methods and recommendations for urban pedestrian and bicycle traffic in Africa. They document a first set of tested findings, but certainly do not yet cover all urban road infrastructure planning and design situations in Africa that involve pedestrian and bicycle traffic. More field testing in more countries and cities in Africa and involving more experts is vital to arrive at a broader collection of proven planning methods, avenues of intervention, and road designs
