A Survey of Work Value in the Use of Information Systems: a Case of Selected Business Firms in Kenya

Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to determine whether use of information system support user's work values. The perception of work values at the work place is compared with Information systems support for those values. The need for the study arises from the fact that, the extent to which an information system implementation represents value systems that are congruent or conflicting with the values systems of the intended users can have a pronounced effect. This is

mostly on the users decision about how the computer-supported work processes are appropriated (or not appropriated) into the users work situation. During the implementation process most companies focus on issues such as cost reduction, competitiveness, keeping pace with technology but forget to match this with the users work value that lead to increased use of the systems to meet the objectives set. In order to answer the questions raised in the study, data was collected using 40

Questionnaire distributed to business firms within Nairobi. The data collected consisted of the respondents' perception on work values and support of Information Systems to work values and general Information system usage in their companies.

The results revealed that there are five work value factors namely: ~ i 1 Organizational 2 Work environ,m. ent 3 Social.
