Three Approaches for Integrating Conservation and Development

Abstract

Danida Forest Seed Centre (DFSC) is a Danish non-profit institution and has been working with management of tree genetic resources since 1969. One of DFSC's main objectives is to assist developing countries in provision of good seed for tree planting based on wise use of genetic resources. DFSC has five focal areas: (1) Integrated tree seed programmes (including elements of seed procurement, tree improvement, gene conservation) with focus on technical aspects as well as institutional set-up and capacity building; (2) Quality Seeds and Plants to Tree Planting Farmers; (3) Conservation of Forest Genetic Resources for Future Use; (4) Enhanced Use of the Diversity of Tree Species; and (5) Outreach and Services (DFSC, 2000). Conservation and development are important issues within almost all of these focal areas.
