Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Sexually Transmitted Infections (Stis) Among Young Female University Students: a Case Studyuniversity of Nairobi

Abstract

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) have continued to cause havoc and problems for women. Young women have always been at a greater risk of contracting STIs not only in Kenya, but also in most developing countries. This has led to high incidences of death through Cancer of the Cervix and AIDS. Through STIs, many women have found themselves infertile leading to breaking up of homes and marriages later on in life. Social and Reproductive health problems such as divorce due to infertility, death through cancer of the Cervix or AIDS are all preventable if women learn more about STIs at an early age. This study applied both qualitative and quantitative approaches in data collection, processing and analysis. This study applied the STATISTICA data analysis Program which is widely used and accepted statistical data processor. The study centered on University of Nairobi (UoN) female students ranging between the ages of 18-25 years who reside within the residence halls. This particular' group was chosen because they are at a precarious stage where any misinformed decision can lead to dire consequences later on in life. The study found that knowledge, attitudes and practices go hand in hand when it came STIs and it made recommendations that could be used to ensure that correct knowledge leads to positive attitudes and sexual practices that will curb the spread of STIs among this high risk group.
