    Abstract
In traditional Kenya society single parenthood was rare and due to death or divorce. Communal care for a child was provided, even when one parent was thus lost. Today there is a trend toward increasing numbers of single parents without marital partners. Interviews with these single mothers reveal the role strains, difficulties and coping strategies that they encounter in parenting
