Refugees In Development Of Host Country, The New World Order: A Case Study Of Ethiopian Refugees In Kenya; In The African Population In The 21st Century

Abstract

Current global environmental chaos caused by elements such as ecostress, insecurity and poverty have led to the mushrooming of refugees, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This article examines the refugee problem in SSA in general, and underlines policy intervention strategies. Using data from a case study of Ethiopian refugees in Kenya, the paper assesses how refugees can be enabled to realize their individual potentialities by actively involving in business and commercial activities. In particular, the Kenyan innovation in passenger transport, the matutu sector, demonstrate that refugees investment in the industry has created employment for many Kenyans as well as the poor Ethiopian refugees. Moreover, this article clearly demonstrates that refugees should not be regarded as trouble-shooters and a problem in a country of asylum. Instead, they have potentiality that needs nurturing for the development of the individual refugee, the host country, and the global humanity.
