Transmissible gastroenteritis in Kenya

Abstract

Annual pig production in Kenya is about 100,000 and the industry is becoming increasingly popular. This is due to the rapidly increasing population with the consequent decrease in availability of land. Transmissible gastroenteritis was recently diagnosed for the first time in four farms where fourteen piglets died. Diagnosis was confirmed by post-mortem pathology, virus isolation and neutrallization test. The potential effect of this disease spreading to susceptible herds and possible control measures are described.
